RadiographyThe Radiography curriculum prepares the graduate to be a radiographer, a skilled health care professional who uses radiation to produce images of the human body. Course work includes clinical rotations to area health care facilities, radiographic exposure, image processing, radiographic procedures, physics, pathology, patient care and management, radiation protection, quality assurance, anatomy and physiology, and radiobiology. Graduates of accredited programs are eligible to apply to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists national examination for certification and registration as medical radiographers. Graduates may be employed in hospitals, clinics, physicians' offices, medical laboratories, government agencies, and industry. Specific Entrance Requirements
NoticeApplicants should be aware that the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is the nationally recognized organization which provides voluntary certification exams and registration status information for radiographers. As such, the ARRT Code of Ethics has strict requirements for individuals who have a criminal background or history of military court-martial. Applicants with such a history are strongly advised to contact the ARRT and go through the pre-application process to determine future eligibility status before enrolling in the radiography program. Decisions on ARRT applicant eligibility based on criminal background are solely the responsibility of the ARRT. Radiography students will be required to complete clinical rotations which may require them to travel as much as one hour from campus. Clinical affiliates are currently located in Asheville, Brevard, Hendersonville, Fletcher, Weaverville, and Marion. Radiography students may have to complete energized laboratory assignments or perform a five to eight week rotation during the late afternoon-early evening hours (3:30 - 10 p.m.) at some time during the program. RADIOGRAPHY PROGRAM MISSION AND GOALSThe mission of the Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College (A-B Tech) Radiography Program is to provide the clinical and didactic education necessary to develop competent entry-level radiographers for the healthcare industry located in Western North Carolina.
