In-service for Police Officers OFFERINGS November 15,16,17, 2010 December 13,14,15, 2010
These courses will cover the new MANDATORY in-service training that became effective for law enforcement officers in North Carolina January 1, 2009. Students may sign up for the individual classes. Twenty-four hours of credit will be awarded to students who successfully complete all three days Day 1: 0800-1000 Mental Illness Suicide by Cop 1000-1200 Civil Liability 1300-1700 Subject Control Update
Day 2: 0800-1200 Legal Update 1300-1500 Hazardous Material 1500-1700 Blood borne Pathogens
Day 3: 0800-1200 In-Service Firearms 1300-1700 Career Survival Detention Officer Certification
Course This course is the State mandated certification course for detention officers and will meet five to six days a week. Interested students should contact Dianne Davis for information: Dianne Davis 254-1921 Ext 841 Ddavis@abtech.edu NEXT COURSE: TBA Classes will be scheduled this Spring and Fall, contact Dianne Davis for scheduling information. Standardized Field Sobriety Testing This course is designed to enable officers to determine the impairment level of an individual who is under the influence of alcohol or a narcotic and to prepare them for prosecution in such cases. The course is four days of training with classroom and field exercises. Officers will need to properly administer the field sobriety test at the end of the course duration. Basic Lidar Certification This course is for currently certified radar operators who want to become LIDAR certified. Classes begin at 8 am both days. Dates: TBA Location: Hemlock 305 Special Requirements: Study and practice prior to class. Radar,
Lidar, and/or Vascar Re-Certification This course is for currently certified radar, lidar, or radar/vascar operators who need to re-certify. Officers should bring their radar course notebooks and practice their clocks prior to class. All Radar Classes begin at 8 am Special Requirements: Study and practice prior to class.

Sniper Training This course provides basic shooting skills and information in reference to a LEO sniper. Note: There will be an advanced Sniper school in April.

Radar Certification This is the State regulated 40 hour basic radar certification course. Students completing the course must pass a State certification test. The manual will be provided. All Radar Classes begin at 8 am. Special Requirements: Radar equipped patrol car. Dates: § December 6-9, 2010 Location: Hemlock 305
Combat Preparation
Instinct Enhancement Class At the end of this course students should be able to: list and describe how verbal cues, non-verbal cues combine to provide pre-attack indicators that contribute to an officer’s situational awareness; describe how instincts are enhanced and how they affect an officer’s ability to perceive and act to counter an imminent attack; use the F.E.A.R. acronym to develop a mental condition for proper combat mindset; discuss force options available to an officer during a combat situation; explain the “reasonableness standard” as it is applied by Graham v. Connor; discuss the relevancy of Scott v. Henrich when applied to use of force; summarize Tennessee v. Garner as it relates to the use of deadly force.
