Career Development Services focuses on providing services to current and potential A-B Tech curriculum students.

What services does A-B Tech’s Career Center offer?
The Career Center offers career counseling, career assessment, assistance in selecting a major, identifying fields of study at four year institutions, goal setting and occupational exploration. We also offer job seeking skills and help with resume writing and interviewing techniques.

What is career counseling?
Career counseling involves learning about yourself, discovering occupations, and understanding how to use tools and resources that can help you find the best occupations for your personality and interests. It uses counseling sessions, career assessments, activities, and reading materials to help you find your career focus.

Who benefits most from career counseling?
Career counseling can be useful for individuals who do not know what career field they would like to enter, are having trouble deciding on a college major or program, want to confirm a career choice that they have already made or are making a career change.

What kinds of career information are available in the Career Center?
Our Career Center has a library with books on a variety of career choices, resume writing and job search techniques as well as “Choices” an occupational/educational computer program that has information on careers, educational programs and self-assessment tools to help with self exploration. We also can provide you with websites on various occupations and majors.

Where is the Career Center located?
We are located in the K Ray Bailey Student Services Center. The center is open from 8:30 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Monday – Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

How prepared do I need to be to see a career counselor?
We understand that you probably are having some difficulty choosing a major or making a career choice so we do not need you to prepare prior to seeing a career counselor.

I am an older student planning to return to school. How can the Career Center help me?
A career counselor can help you to clarify your current needs and interests and set goals based on a realistic assessment of your particular situation. We will help you explore your career options in order to choose an academic program as well as determine your career plans. Our Career Counselors also understand the special concerns and needs of returning students and can help you with this transition.

How do I find out what occupations might be open to graduates in my major?
There are several ways to do this including: Choices (a computer based career information system), books, information files and Internet sites. These resources can be found in the Career Center and our career counselors are also available to help you with your research.

How can I learn more about an occupation that interests me?
We have a number of resources that offer occupational information including Choices, the Occupational Outlook Handbook and Internet sites. We also have book and files that can provide information on thousands of occupations. Another way to do this is to arrange an informational interview with someone who is already working in the field.

A-B Tech’s career counselors can help you with resume and interview preparation as well as provide you with information and websites that can assist you in finding employment. The Mountain Area JobLink Career Center, which is located on campus in the Maple Building, is also a great resource for finding employment.

How do I put together a resume?
You can pick up a free resume guide in the career center as well as consult some of our resume books to help you prepare your resume. You can also visit our Resume Writing page to find out tips for improving your resume.

How can I prepare for an upcoming interview?
Tips on interviewing are available on our Interview Skills page and in the Career Center. Our career counselors are available for mock interviews where you can practice your interview skills and receive immediate feedback. You can also get help with interviews by visiting the Mountain Area JobLink Career Center in the Maple Building. The Job Link Center offers a variety of employment resources including an interview workshop.
